Getting around the Island
Getting around Alderney is easy. Nowhere is
very far. Everything is within walking distance, five minutes from somewhere
else. You can walk the short distance from the airport to the island's
capital of St. Anne's, or you can hire a taxi.
During the summer season, there is a regular bus service around the
island, and there is, of course, Alderney's
own Orient Express, the famous Alderney Railway - an experience not to be
missed - Click
here.
One of the best introductions to the beautiful and
unspoilt landscape of Alderney is a guided
coach tour or a boat excursion around the island - Click here for more information on
boat charter. Then follow the trails at your own pace and leisure: take a
walk on the wild side, across the commons and along the cliffs. If cliff
walks are too energetic for you, take a leisurely stroll along any of the
golden sandy beaches which all have one thing in common: they are clean,
quiet and, above all, blissfully uncrowded, virtually all year round.
Taxi Alderney's taxi drivers are welcoming,
reliable and always helpful. Just pick up the freephone in the airport or
call from the public phone box at the harbour.

Alderney Railway
The Channel Islands' only working railway - which, in 1997, celebrated its 150th
birthday - runs from the harbour up to the north-east coast and back again.
The railway line was inaugurated by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The
diesel engine pulls former London Underground carriages along a scenic
coastal route before cutting across country towards Mannez Quarry and the
nearby Mannez Lighthouse. It's a popular attraction and always runs bang on
time. This train and the little Wickhams can also be chartered. For bookings

Bicycle Hire
A good selection of adults' and children's bikes, mountain bikes and several
tandems can be hired from any of the following establishments:
Guided Island Tours
The best introduction to Alderney is a guided tour - by taxi or by coach.
Throughout the season, guided coach tours usually run twice daily and are
advertised by the various booking offices in Victoria Street. The tours last
around 1.5 hours and take you across the island to several breathtaking
spots.
The coach stops frequently for you to take in the views, take your holiday
snaps and stretch your legs.
The driver will give you an entertaining and informative commentary about
Alderney's history, its landmarks and traditions, occasionally spiced up with
anecdotes. Wait for the one about the white lady on horseback.... French,
German or Dutch-speaking guides can be provided on request - at a small
additional supplement.
