For a good workout, irrespective of age, you have the choice of fitness classes, aerobics, Pilates and weight training at different fitness levels which take place at the Butes Centre or the Catholic Hall.

Angling  -    Sea angling
Alderney's varied coastline and crystal-clear water, rich in marine life, offers more than 70 different species, a number of which are British records.  No permission needed to fish anywhere from the coastline or the harbour. 

You can charter Alderney Felix, a new 12-passenger fishing vessel and  the local tackle shop Click here  will offer  equipment and advice. 

 

 

 

Angling -    Shore Fishing
Whether an experienced or casual angler, there is something to suit everyone's taste and abilities. In summer mackerel, plaice, sole and bass. In winter, vast shoals of mullet, conger and tope, exceeding record sizes, come close inshore.

Alderney has its own Angling Club and the Annual Angling Festival (October) attracts around 200 competitors from all over Britain (click here "What’s On"). Seven UK records are currently held on the island.

Tackle Shop - What a service!

To make things easy for keen anglers, the Tackle Shop sets up stall at the entrance to the Commercial Quay at Braye Harbour from 0745h to 0900, when you can purchase fishing tackle , boat terminal gear to include braid, line, hooks, swivels and booms. An extensive range of shads, pirks, feathers and plastic lures is also available plus accessories such as knives, rig wallets and much more all at very competitive prices. Some boat rods are on

There is an enthusiastic Aero Club based at the airport which has its own own plane. Highlight of the Club's activities include Alderney's Annual Fly-In which attracts some 150 aircraft, and the Annual Air Race when Britain’s top air racers head for Alderney.

Juggling
Beginners are welcome to join the weekly juggling classes at the Masonic Hall.  Skills demonstrated and taught include: unicycling, diabolo, fire clubs, knives or just balls.  Equipment on loan or for sale. Alderney has hosted several Annual Juggling Conventions which have attracted many accomplished jugglers and artists from the UK and the Continent.

Private yachts are always welcome in Braye Harbour, an excellent stop-over en route to Guernsey Jersey and the Normandy and Brittany coast -

A variety of nautical events are organised every year by the Alderney Sailing Club whose clubhouse overlooks Braye Harbour and welcomes sailors from all recognised clubs. Scuba Diving
Experienced and certified divers (BSAC or CMAS 2 *) may join members of the Alderney Diving Club on their regular under-water explorations around the Island. All BSAC regulations apply and divers must have their own equipment. Cylinders and air can be supplied. Contact the Diving Officer.


 

 

Swimming
Although Alderney does not, as yet, have a public swimming pool, a project to build a Sports Centre which will also include a swimming pool, is underway. Meanwhile, enjoy Alderney's finest beaches which are ideal for swimming. Dogs and horses are not allowed on the beaches – other than Platte Saline – from April to September.

Tennis
The Alderney Tennis Club has four top-class hard courts and one practice half court and welcomes visitors - enthusiastic beginners or experienced players alike.   Players must wear correct tennis clothes or tracksuits. Rackets and tennis balls for hire. Frequent club events and tournaments staged throughout the year.


 

 

Walking
The Island is small enough for all parts to be reached on foot. In addition to the picturesque cobbled streets and lanes of St Anne, Alderney is a haven for wildlife, flora and fauna and offers many interesting and panoramic walks across cliff paths, roads and lanes to nature reserves and common land.
A series of guided walks take place are organised by the Alderney Wildlife Trust and the Alderney Society.
Leaflets and maps will be provided and the guides are enthusiastic local experts who are guaranteed to provide interesting little snippets of history and 'hear-say'.
For more information about recommended walks go to the Alderney Wildlife Trust website. The Alderney Wildlife Trust has produced a series of interesting walks and can organise guided tours for small groups.


A comprehensive walking guide/map identifying all points of interest (£1) has been produced by the Alderney Wildlife Trust and, together with other information and maps is available from the  Alderney Information Centre, Victoria Street which is open Monday to Saturday from 10.00 to 12.00 and from 14.00-16.00 Monday to Friday.

Our guides are enthusiastic local experts who are guaranteed to provide interesting little snippets of history and 'hear-say'.

Water Skiing and Wind Surfing
Alderney's beaches are ideally suited for these water sports. However, please bring your own gear, as water sport equipment is not yet available for hire.
